Dental SedationSay Goodbye to Your Dental Fears with Sedation Dentistry
Dental Sedation Options
Many patients are overcome with feelings of anxiety when contemplating dental treatment. Dr. Silverstein and Dr. Parker are trained and certified through the Ohio State Dental Board to provide dental sedation services to our patients. They maintain current certification in ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) to help ensure patient safety. All other staff members are trained in BLS (Basic Life Support).
This type of sedation dentistry provides a light level of sedation/anxiety reduction through the inhalation of oxygen mixed with nitrous oxide. With this type of sedation, patients are usually able to drive home.
With this type of dental sedation, patients are given a dose of an oral sedative prior to their appointment. Patients arrive at the appointment in a relaxed state. In some cases, nitrous oxide is administered during the appointment to increase the level of anxiety reduction. Due to the amnesiac effects of the medications, patients report little recollection of their appointment. Patients are required to arrange transportation for appointments utilizing oral sedation as driving is not permitted for at least 12 hours after the sedative agents are administered.
Intravenous Sedation (IV Dental Sedation)
With this type of dental sedation, medications are administered directly into the blood-stream. This allows us to administer the appropriate dosage of sedative agents for each patient. Due to the amnesiac effects of the medications, patients report little or no recollection of their appointment. Patients are required to arrange transportation for appointments utilizing IV sedation as driving is not permitted for at least 12 hours after the sedative agents are administered.
