Dr. Silverstein has received extensive training in non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapies using the most cutting-edge technologies available for your safety, your care and your comfort. Please click on the topics below to learn more about each one.
Galileos Cone Beam CT Scanner
Simply put, the Sirona Galileos is an in-office cat scan, sometimes referred to as a cone beam cat scan, designed specifically for dental specialists such as Periodontists and Oral/Maxillofacial Surgeons. The scanner provides highly accurate, high definition, 3-D images and information. This gives Dr. Silverstein complete and accurate views of the anatomy of a patient’s mouth face and jaw areas.
With the cone beam cat scan, our doctors can capture and more accurately analyze images of the position and orientation of critical structures like nerves, tooth roots, jawbone, sinuses and other data in three dimensions. This is achieved in 3-D, with much greater resolution and clarity than with traditional x-ray films or scans.
You can imagine the huge diagnostic advantage this technology offers our doctors. By allowing them to see teeth, jaw and nerves in precisely calibrated 3-D measurements, the surgeon can tell if there is sufficient bone present or whether important nerves are a safe distance away. We feel that the acquisition of this technology is a tremendously important benefit for our patients.
This non-invasive, painless and comfortable procedure greatly enhances our ability to accurately predict the success of dental implants, tooth exposures, and other surgical procedures. It can help avoid unnecessary surgery and guide our doctors toward less invasive surgical procedures.
Patients that are concerned about reducing risk and increasing the likelihood of a successful outcome during implant placement, tooth extractions or other procedures should seriously consider the diagnostic advantages of utilizing cone beam imaging technology.
This is all accomplished, right in our office, in a comfortable, open environment in less than 15 seconds. With the Galileos scanner, Dr. Silverstein can diagnose and discuss your situation with a great degree of accuracy and help you make an informed decision on how best to proceed.
Dr. Silverstein is one of only a handful dental specialists nationally that can provide this service for our patients.
For more than ten years, our office has utilized digital x-rays to image our patients. This cutting-edge technology saves time and reduces your exposure to dental radiation by nearly 90% over traditional x-rays. Here at the Ohio Valley Center for Periodontics and Implants, your safety is our greatest concern.
Laser Periodontal Therapy with LANAP
The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure™ (LANAP™) is an innovative, bio compatible periodontal therapy designed for the effective treatment of gum disease through regeneration, rather than resection, making it well aligned with the goal of bio-compatible periodontal therapy to eliminate infection without eliminating tooth structure.
With LANAP Laser Periodontal Therapy, a tiny laser fiber is inserted between the tooth and the gum, and the infection is cleared away without any cutting or stitching of the gums. The tooth roots are then thoroughly cleaned of tartar and plaque, and the laser is used again with a different setting to create a stable, firm blood clot to seal the pocket. LANAP targets and eliminates only diseased tissue and conserves healthy root structures and gum tissue, reflecting bio compatible periodontal therapeutic principles. Furthermore, because LANAP assists with the formation of a fibrin clot between the tooth and gum to initiate attachment, the procedure allows the patient’s own immune system to assist in the healing process.
The LANAP Laser Periodontal Therapy Advantage
LANAP provides a number of benefits over traditional surgery, including reduced post-operative pain, fewer sessions, and a quicker, easier recovery time. Unlike conventional scalpel/suture flap surgery, LANAP is fast, usually requiring just one to two sessions each lasting two to three hours, and patients can often return to their regular daily activities immediately following the procedure.

Equipment & Instrument Sterilization
Everyone benefits from rigorous infection control: you, your dentist, and the dental team. The cornerstone of a good, safe dental practice is trust. You should feel confident in the care you receive at your dentist’s office. That’s why we want you to know everything about our daily procedures and policies. Dr. Silverstein and our entire team follow procedures recommended by several federal agencies: the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). These measures include:
- Use of disinfectant hand soap
- Use of gloves and face masks
- Chemical disinfection of countertops and surfaces
- Sterilization of all equipment before every use
- Use of disposable materials
Our office heat sterilizes all reusable equipment, including dental hand-pieces. We use an autoclave, a device which kills bacteria and viruses by steam, heat, and pressure. Additionally, we help our patients with their effectiveness in their at-home cleaning.
