Pre-operative Instructions

The following instructions may be helpful when preparing for your upcoming out-patient surgery and procedure. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any last minute questions. We welcome your calls and can be reached at Ohio Valley Center for Periodontics & Implants Office Phone Number 513-854-0338 during regular business hours.

As our goal is to make your experience as comfortable and convenient as possible, pillows, blankets, and headphones may be available to you during our surgery. Prior to your appointment, a member of our team will contact you to discuss pre-operative instructions in order to better prepare your for your procedure. If you are utilizing any type of sedation for your procedure, detailed instructions will be discussed with you at this time.

It may be important to stop taking aspirin and non-steroidals such as Motrin and Advil, 7-10 days prior to your surgery. If you are taking Coumadin or another blood thinner, remember to discontinue them as directed. If you take antibiotic pre-medication, please take it as directed before your surgery. You will feel better if you have eaten prior to surgery.

In order to evaluate your progress and healing, we take a serious approach to continuing care and post operative checks throughout the weeks following your procedure. A periodontal maintenance cleaning and an examination of tissue maturation may follow about 10-12 weeks following the surgery.

Antibiotics & medications

Please alert the office to any allergies, sensitivities, and any and all medications that you are taken, or have taken within the last few months. You will be prescribed an antibiotic if our doctor determines it to be necessary. Take as directed until gone. It is advisable not to take these medications on an empty stomach, as nausea may result. For women taking birth control pills, be advised that antibiotics may interfere with their effectiveness.

Sedatives

Some sedation options offered at the office require a driver to and from your scheduled out-patient surgical procedure. You must have a driver if utilizing any type of pre-sedative medication. Some examples of those medications that you may be prescribed prior to your surgery are:

  • Ativan (Lorazepam)
  • Valium (Diazepam)
  • Triazalam (Halcion)

Upon completing your procedure, Dr. Silverstein and a member of our surgical team will discuss post-operative and home care instructions with you and your driver (if necessary).
